What do I need to know about mattresses?

Thick luxury mattresses should be reserved for the bottom bunk.

Once you get the bunk bed home you will realize that making up the top bunk is the hardest part of maintaining it. One tip is to place a fitted sheet on the mattress for the top bunk prior to putting on the bed frame. Thick luxury mattresses should be reserved for the bottom bunk. Most children and adults will be quite comfortable on a standard 312 coil insulated mattress. This type of mattress is ideal because it is not too heavy to lift onto the top bunk, and it is usually seven to eight inches thick which works well with most guardrail systems.

A Bunkie board will provide better support to a top bunk mattress than slats. A Bunkie board is usually about 1 ½ inches thick, which gives a nice flat, covered surface on which to support the mattress. They are constructed with a wooden frame that has been covered with cloth and a thin board. They get their strength from the manner in which they are constructed. With a Bunkie board in place you should not hesitate to jump up onto the top bunk with your child for bedtime stories and kisses.
